The charmingly decorated Virginia Beach condo was right on the waterfront, close enough to the ocean that the sound of waves breaking on shore could be heard through the doors that led from the living room to the balcony. The sun slanted through wooden blinds discreetly adjusted to insure privacy while letting in breathtaking glimpses of sky and water. It was the perfect setting for an after-lunch seduction in late spring, which was precisely why Nick had chosen it. Among other benefits, he and Eleanor Cranford could enjoy a leisurely breakfast tomorrow morning and still be back in D.C. by noon, six hours before her husband and his chief legislative aide would be returning from their “business” trip to Lexington.

Nick carried a glass of white wine over to the sofa where Eleanor Cranford was sitting, her tightly crossed legs and ramrod straight back shouting a message of tension mingled with guilty excitement.

“This is a pinot grigio from the Alto Adige region of Italy,” he said, handing her the glass. He avoided doing anything obvious like letting their fingers touch. Eleanor wasn’t an experienced adulterer, and he suspected her sexual tension would vanish if there was any suggestion that he was performing by rote and not by desire. “It is a light wine, but there is a pleasant subnote of fruit. I think you will like it.”

As always when he was about to undertake a seduction on behalf of Unit One, his Russian accent had thickened, although without any conscious intent on his part. He was self-aware enough to realize that adopting the persona of Nikolai Anwar, exotic Russian entrepreneur, helped to distance his emotions from the physical actions his body was engaging in. He didn’t choose to probe that awareness, however. Especially not today, when he was already expending far too much energy to suppress the knowledge that—despite what might have seemed to be the case with Jacyntha Ramon—he hadn’t had sex with any woman other than Melody in six long months. Since the first night he’d taken Melody into his bed, in fact.

This seduction of Eleanor Cranford was work, he reminded himself brusquely. There was nothing in what would happen here today that could be considered a betrayal of his relationship with Melody. Besides, Melody had made it crystal clear that their personal relationship was over. Which, surely to God, was what he wanted, or at least recognized was best for both of them. Neither his profession nor his past made him a candidate for promises of commitment and eternal devotion.

“I enjoy Italian wines,” Eleanor said. She took the wine from him and sipped nervously. “Most of the Russians I’ve met never drink anything but vodka.”

Nick smiled easily. “I am only half Russian, remember. But I drink vodka, too. When the moment is right, it is an excellent drink.” He managed to make the remark sound faintly sexual. He sat down next to her and raised his wine glass, holding her gaze. “Here’s to a long and pleasant afternoon,” he said softly.
